Skewer with Twisted Dagger-hilt Terminal Skewer
This is a skewer. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Skewers, at first tools for roasting, have been used for centuries for dining, often in silver. In the late nineteenth century, they took on a more decorative role when intricately carved vegetables, fruits, and crayfish were served on skewers with ornate terminals for main-course dishes and desserts alike ("Feeding Desire: Design and the Tools of the Table, 1500 - 2000," May - August 13, 2006).
