Skewer with Eagle Head Terminal Skewer
This is a skewer. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
text from "Implements of Eating" in Feeding Desire exhibition catalogue:
"The elegance of the late nineteenth-century table was enhanced by the use of skewer, which could make even mundane dishes look grand (fig. 47). The french chef Urbain Dubois promoted the fashion for these attelettes (from the French hatelets) in his Artistic Cookery, publish in London in 1870 (fig. 48.). Silver skewers holding intricately carved vegetables, fruits, or often crawfish surmounted desserts and roasts alike, and turned horizontal presentations into architectural fantasies. Ornate finials with figures from mythology and nature added to their appeal. For additional drama, the attelettes could be threaded with cubes of aspic, which shimmered in teh candlelight, making them a desirable addition to the late Victorian table."
