Fork and Knife with Porcelain Handles Fork And Knife

This is a fork and knife. It was manufactured by Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. It is dated 1737–1739 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is porcelain, vitreous enamel, gold, steel. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Sarah Cooper Hewitt and Eleanor Garnier Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.

Its dimensions are

L x W x D (a: knife): 22.8 × 2 × 1.7 cm (9 in. × 13/16 in. × 11/16 in.) L x W x D (b: fork): 18.6 × 1.5 × 2.2 cm (7 5/16 × 9/16 × 7/8 in.)

It has the following markings

Blade of knife (a): [1] seven-lobed flower (?), stamped (interior of mark not visible) Reverse of fork (b): [1] pinecone above "C", stamped (mark for Augsburg, Germany, 1737 or 1739) [2] lion rampant, stamped (possibly for Bamberg, Germany, 2nd half of 18th century) Porcelain handles unmarked.
