Cup and Saucer, from a Napoleon III Table Service (Tasse et soucoupe, Service à Chiffre Doré de l'Empereur Napoléon III) Cup And Saucer

This is a cup and saucer. It was manufactured by Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. It is dated 1849–1859 and we acquired it in 1926. Its medium is hard paste porcelain, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane. It is credited Bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane.

Its dimensions are

H x W x D (a: cup): 4.9 × 11 × 9.2 cm (1 15/16 × 4 5/16 × 3 5/8 in.) H x diam. (b: saucer): 2.1 × 13.7 cm (13/16 × 5 3/8 in.)

It has the following markings

Underside of cup: [1] "S.49." within pill-shaped mark, printed in green (glazed and fired in 1849) [2] eagle flanked by "S." and "53", printed in red (manufactory mark) [3] cursive "P 49 [?] 5C", incised (probably potter's mark) Underside of saucer: [1] "S.57" within pill-shaped mark, printed in green (glazed and fired in 1857) [2] "DORÉ À / SÈVRES" surrounding crowned "N" with “59” beneath, printed in red (gilt decoration added in 1859) [3] cursive "15 59" (?), incised (probably potter's mark)

It is inscribed

Cup and saucer: [1] central crowned "N" entwined with interlaced L's in foliate scrollwork, printed in gold
