Print, Ornamental Candelabrum
This is a Print. It was created by Daniel Hopfer. It is dated 1520 and we acquired it in 1920. Its medium is etching on white laid paper, lined. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Hopfer, who began his career as a decorative designer for armor, is considered to be the first master of etching on paper. He etched many ornamental designs, which were frequently indebted to other artists, including the printmaker Giovanni Antonio da Brescia. By subjecting borrowed elements to his own inventive style, Hopfer became one of handful of printmakers to contribute to the emergence of Italianate ornamental design in northern Europe early in the 16th century.
