Drawing, Design for a monumental gateway honoring the arrival of Marie Antoinette at Versailles
This is a Drawing. It was patron: Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. It is dated ca. 1770 and we acquired it in 1911. Its medium is pen and chinese ink with ink wash. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
To note the political event that was to influence the fortunes of the two greatest powers in Europe – the marriage of the Dauphin of France (later Louis XVI) and Marie-Antoinette of Austria – celebrations of the most grandiose and sumptuous character were organized. Beginning in Vienna in April, 1770 with great pomp and ceremony, the bride-to-be made her way to Versailles through Strasbourg, Saverne, Nancy, Chalon-sur-Marne, and Soissons where ceremonial arches and other festive apparatuses greeted her. The festivities finally concluded in May in Paris. This drawing has traditionally been associated with Marie-Antoinette’s arrival in Versailles where the actual wedding took place, but the dolphin motif and the double-L monograms certainly relate to the Dauphin.
