Drawing, Deign for a Covered Tureen
This is a Drawing. It was created by Johann Alois Seethaler and attributions: Joseph Anton Seethaler II. It is dated 1825–35 and we acquired it in 1911. Its medium is pen and black ink, brush and wash, graphite on white laid paper . It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Joseph Anton Seethaler II came from a long line of master silversmiths in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The tureen has for centuries, been one of the most significant pieces of silverware on the table. This drawing for a silver tureen is bifurcated in the middle to show two alternate design schemes on the left and right sides, presumably to offer options to a client. The handle of the cover is the only common element to both design variants.
