Drawing, Design for an Ornament Panel
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier. It is dated 1733–34 and we acquired it in 1911. Its medium is pen and brown and black ink, black chalk, brush and yellow, pale green, gray, and brown washes on white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This design showing a putto playing with an eagle or phoenix set against rays of sunlight probably alludes to the birth of the son of Louis XV and Maria Lesczynska, which ensured the continuation of the royal line. Gabriel Huquier’s etching after this drawing appeared among the earliest group of Meissonnier prints published by the Widow Chéreau in 1734.
