Medal (USA)
This is a Medal. It was designed by Victor David Brenner. It is dated 1906 and we acquired it in 1906. Its medium is engraved bronze. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, this medal served as the model for the U.S. Lincoln penny introduced in 1909. The obverse or “heads” side has remained the same, giving it the longest run of a coin in U.S. history. While pennies are not usually associated with wealth, a famous quote from the 19th century justifies their worth, stating “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
