Cope Hood (Italy)
This is a Cope hood. It is dated 16th century and we acquired it in 1902. Its medium is silk and metallic embroidery on linen foundation and its technique is embroidered in couching stitches in silk and metallic yarns on plain weave foundation. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Since medieval times, the cope hood has been non-functional, seemingly maintained as part of liturgical vestments simply as another surface to adorn in splendor. Embroidery for costly vestments such as these would have been designed by a professional designer, most likely a painter, working in collaboration with professional guild embroiderers whose repertoire of stitches, including underside couching and or nué, were perfectly suited to interpreting painterly effects of perspective, dimensionality, and shading.
