Tapestry Fragment (Spain)

This is a Tapestry fragment. It is dated 13th century and we acquired it in 1902. Its medium is silk, metallic (gilded parchment wound around silk core) and its technique is plain weave with discontinuous wefts (slit tapestry), with eccentric wefts. It is a part of the Textiles department.

One of the finest examples of medieval Spanish tapestry weaving in any museum, the design of this fragment includes an Islamic interlacing motif. The subject matter is indicative of a looser interpretation of Islamic traditions, when drinking and other leisure activities were openly celebrated.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Beautiful Ladies.

This object was donated by John Pierpont Morgan. It is credited Gift of John Pierpont Morgan.
