Textile (Spain), 12th–13th century

This is a Textile. It is dated 12th–13th century and we acquired it in 1902. Its medium is silk, gilded parchment on silk core, board, gouache and its technique is compound weave (taquete). It is a part of the Textiles department.

The textile is an example of visual surface integrity overriding the purity of the material. Early restoration reveals that areas of thread loss were filled in with painted renderings that imitated the woven areas.

This object was donated by John Pierpont Morgan. It is credited Gift of John Pierpont Morgan, from the Badia Collection.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 31.8 x 33 cm (12 1/2 x 13 in.) Mount: 45.7 x 61 cm (18 x 24 in.)
