Case (Italy)

This is a case. It is dated 16th century. Its medium is leather (cuir bouilli). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The leather fashioned for cases of this type, called cuir bouilli, was soaked in hot water and then molded over a core of wood or stone. It was impregnated with wax to help keep its shape adn was often ornamented with incised, stamped or gilded designs.

This object was donated by Samuel P. Avery. It is credited Gift of Samuel P. Avery.
