Frontage (Italy)
This is a Frontage. It is dated 1650–65. Its medium is linen and its technique is mid to late 17th c raised needle lace. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Louis XIV's Proclamation of 1665 established a state-supported lace industry in France. The laces were to be as good as foreign products, the high cost of which were helping to drain the country's economy. Those based on Venetian models are difficult, if not impossible, to detect.
