Textile
This is a Textile. It is dated 1915–1920 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is block printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.
The Arts & Crafts movement embraced Japanese art as the embodiment of simplicity and authentic craftsmanship. Collections of ukiyo-e prints were circulated among artists and designers of the period, who admired their emphasis on a connection to nature, especially landscapes, as subject matter, but also with the truthfulness of the flattened picture plane.
The cool, delicate palette and evening scene of a full moon partially hidden behind the trees call to mind James McNeil Whistler’s Nocturnes, a series of landscape paintings which evoked the tranquility of evening time. Whistler was, himself, a major collector of Japanese art, and incorporated many elements of Japonism in his work.
The design is printed on an upholstery-weight wool and cotton. The Textiles Department has very little representation of the American Arts & Crafts movement, so this piece would make an unusual but welcome addition.
