Textile, Mosaic
This is a Textile. It was designed by Ramon Prats and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Mosaic, designed to resemble aqua and gray tiles laid into a darker teal ground, was created by Spanish-born artist Ramon Prats. Prats, who left the U.S. shortly after working with Associated American Artists, went on to spearhead the development of modern art in Mexico during the half-century that followed.
This design in this colorway is currently represented in the museum’s collection (1994-38-3). One additional example of Prats’ work, a wallcovering entitled Terrazzo (1954-21-6), is also included in the museum’s collection.
Prats also designed a number of Stonelain ceramic pieces through Associated American Artists, and collaborated with Thomas Vroman to design textiles for the Double Exposure series released by Riverdale Fabrics in in 1953. (1)
