Cartoon-like scene viewed from an elevated perspective on a broad thoroughfare (Avenue of the Patriots) widest at the bottom of the page, narrowing to a vanishing point/horizon about 1/3 from the top. A 3-car, passenger trolley with open-sided coaches and striped awnings is traveling down the Avenue about to run into a group of tourists obliviously standing in the middle of the road. The cars are in zig-zag formation, as if veering. The driver in front on a tractor-like vehicle, looks distressed. 2 women passengers in the first car each has her hand to her mouth, stifling a gasp. A male passenger cranes his neck out the side. Pedestrians on either side of the trolley react to the situation. Among these, on the left (from front to back): a woman wearing a grid-patterened dress ruffled by the trolley's draft holds onto her orange hat. A man in a yellow hat, suit jacket over one arm, shakes his cane at the trolley. A man in a uniform pushes a lady seated in what looks like an armchair on wheels out of the way. On the right - a grey suited man tugs the arm of a woman in a white dress, light blue hat and black handbag who looks over her shoulder, her mouth a big 'O.' A woman in a yellow dress, drawn with a wavy outline making it look windblown, holds onto her hat and dress. Also notable on the right are 10 young ladies/schoolgirls, with beret-like hats, walking in line in pairs, looking up and around unaware of the trolley. Their chaperones are 3 expressionless nuns whose black habits stand out like exclamation points in the colorful scene. The nuns, 1 in back, 1 in the middle right of the line, 1 in front left of the line, echo the zig-zag of the trolley. Also unaware on the left are 2 sailors leaning against a flagpole. All the women wear dresses, smallish hats and heels, all the men wear suits and panama hats. On either side of the thoroughfare, flagpoles with colorful pennants hanging down are situated on green “islands” (like grass). The flagpoles, islands, and roadway direct the eye upwards to the exhibition pavilions at the horizon. Above them a light blue sky has wispy horizontal clouds. All culminates at the top in the magazine’s masthead all caps in purple on 2 lines: Top line: THE” in a smaller font, almost centered over “NEW YORKER” on the second line in a larger font. A small triangle outline is nestled in the “elbow” of the “N. Also on top lineT to far right and far left of 'THE' respectively are date “Sept. 2, 1939” and cost 'Price 15 cents””A tiny five point star, like an asterisk, is left of the date. “KARASZ” is at bottom left in white capitals, running vertically. The scene is colored in shades of purple, orange, jade green, white, black, sky blue.

A double-page spread of a booklet with a band of text along the top, below which are black and white industrial photographs of a diorama of a futuristic city viewed from an expansive, aerial perspective. The photographs appear grey-scale with sepia undertones. The fictional landscape in the photograph on the left is centered on a park with a wide, meandering river running through it, viewed diagonally, growing smaller from the bottom left corner upwards. Above the park, in the far distance, the topography of a city is seen in a cluster of skyscrapers and other buildings. Thoroughfares, bridges, and street lanes are visible but not rendered in fine detail. The right photograph appears to be the cityscape found in the background of the left photograph, but rendered in more detail. It illustrates a number of skyscrapers interspersed with low-rise built structures, surrounding a geometric, rectangular park, perhaps Central Park. On either side of the skyscrapers the land appears largely flat, but built on, perhaps with residential housing, interspersed with a few areas of foliage and idle land. The text above the left photograph states [“Through an ingenious system of traffic flow and direction from the various converging roadways, and by means of the ascending and descending ramps, a four-tier approach to the great bridge is formed. There is no interference or cutting in of traffic lanes. Cars may be driven on and off the bridge without risk of collision and with speeds maintained. / “And directly ahead we again see the river city with its four-tier bridge approach. But now we near the great metropolis of 1960. We will bank high over the city for a spectacular view of its many wonders. / “In 1940 this American city actually existed. Its population then was approximately a million per-sons. Today--in 1960--it is much larger, divided]. It continues on the right page [into three units, residential, commercial and industrial. Nine miles out from the city is a vast airport. /'Here is an American city replanned around a highly developed modern traffic system and, even though this is 1960, the system as yet is not complete. Whenever possible the rights of way of these express city thoroughfares have been so routed as to displace outmoded business sections and undesirable slum areas. / “The city of 1960 has abundant sunshine, fresh air, fine green parkways, recreational and civic centers -- all the result of thoughtful planning and design. There are approximately 38,000,000 motorcars in this America of 1960 -- almost a third more than in]. The text is surrounded by a red lined border above and below it on both pages.
